This is a picture of the point where the power company hooks their wires to the electrical service wires of a house. This is from a service I just replaced in Petoskey, MI. This was very dangerous electrical service connection situation. You can see 
that the insulation on the hot wires has almost completely rotted away.
It’s hard to see from the picture but there is a spot where the wires actually started to arc and melt. If your service wires look like this you need to seek the help of a qualified professional electrician immediately. This is the kind of thing that can cause a devastating house fire.
I wish the city would conduct routine inspections of their Electrical service connection. This is actually the third service I’ve seen in Petoskey with this kind of problem (this being the worst of the three). The typical home owner would never think to check something like this until there is a problem.
